Bills to Watch

Listed below are a few of the bills (but not all) working their way through the House that could impact education. However, please keep in mind, just because a bill is listed here does not mean it will necessarily pass through the House or Senate or be signed by the Governor. We will update this list as more bills are introduced and/or as session progresses. HB2120: school districts; bonds; purposes
Allows school districts to expend bond proceeds for furniture, equipment, and technology if the useful life of the items being purchased is greater than the average duration of the bonds issued.

HB2122 school districts; override elections
Repeals the K-3 override. Allows all districts to request a budget override up to a maximum of fifteen percent of their revenue control limit. Allows override monies to be used for K-3 programs.

HB2169: tax credit; classroom activities; technology
Expands the public school tax credit for extracurricular activities and character education to allow a taxpayer to receive an income tax credit for contributions made to a school for classroom technology or the support of classroom activities.

HB2284: charter schools; enrollment preference
Grants charter schools the option to give enrollment preference to the children of the school's employees. An amendment adopted by the Committee also allows charter schools to give enrollment preference to the children of people employed by the charter holder of the school.

HB2292: compulsory attendance; age; increase
Raises the compulsory school attendance age from sixteen to eighteen.

HB2309 school districts; tax credits; limitation
Expands the public school tax credit to include testing for college credit or college entrance exams and caps the amount public schools may use from student travel tax credits.

HB2415: schools; suspended pupils; admission
Permits a school district to refuse to admit any pupil who has been suspended or is in the process of being suspended from another school.

Establishes a maximum tax rate that school districts can impose on taxpayers.
